This is the first of several entries about Salt Spring Island. What an amazing place. An island between Vancouver, BC and Vancouver Island. Part artist colony, part Cape Cod, part hippy commune, part Canadian laid back vacation village, part farming/fishing salt of the earth.

We had a lovely time there (I recommend flying up on a floatplane from Kenmore Air).

And a high, high point was where we stayed. The Hastings House is not only a gracious inn with luxurious suites, beautiful grounds, lovely views, charming and immensely helpful staff. It is also a truly top notch restaurant that highlights the wonderful foods and wines of the Island and the region (and their own garden)!

Don't miss the glorious breakfasts or afternoon teas either. Boy, I have some working out to do now!!

A friend of mine and some of his friends started a great thing. They are all visitors to the beautiful island of Sumba. This is a very untouched place near Bali. Untouched and in need of lots of help. Well they got together and created the Sumba Foundation that supports education and health programs in this beautiful place. They also produced a stunning book. All proceeds go to the foundation.
