It is called "Is God a Taoist" by Raymond M. Smullyan (a math and logic expert). It is a dialogue between a mortal and God. And it is wonderful and full of great questions and non answers. Here's an excerpt on free will

Mortal: And therefore, O God, I pray thee, if thou hast one ounce of mercy for this thy suffering creature, absolve me of having to have free will!

God: You reject the greatest gift I have given thee?
Mortal: How can you call that which was forced on me a gift? I have free will, but not of my own choice. I have never freely chosen to have free will. I have to have free will, whether I like it or not!

God: Why would you wish not to have free will?
*Mortal: Because free will means moral responsibility, and moral responsibility is more than I can bear!

God: Why do you find moral responsibility so unbearable?

Mortal: Why? I honestly can't analyze why; all I know is that I do.

God: All right, in that case suppose I absolve you from all moral responsibility but leave you still with free will. Will this be satisfactory?

Mortal (after a pause): No, I am afraid not.

God: Ah, just as I thought! So moral responsibility is not the only aspect of free will to which you object. What else about free will is bothering you?

Mortal: With free will I am capable of sinning, and I don't want to sin!

God: Why does the thought of your sinning frighten you?

Mortal: I don't know why! For one thing, you do have a reputation for meting out rather gruesome punishments in the afterlife!

God: Oh, that's what's bothering you! Why didn't you say so in the first place instead of all this peripheral talk about free will and responsibility? Why didn't you simply request me not to punish you for any of your sins?

Mortal: I think I am realistic enough to know that you would hardly grant such a request!

God: You don't say! You have a realistic knowledge of what requests I will grant, eh? Well, I'll tell you what I'm going to do! I will grant you a very, very special dispensation to sin as much as you like, and I give you my divine word of honor that I will never punish you for it in the least. Agreed?

Mortal (in great terror): No, no, don't do that!

God: Why not? Don't you trust my divine word?

Mortal: Of course I do! But don't you see, I don't want to sin! I have an utter abhorrence of sinning, quite apart from any punishments it may entail.

God: In that case, I'll go you one better. I'll remove your abhorrence of sinning. Here is a magic pill! Just swallow it, and you will lose all abhorrence of sinning. You will joyfully and merrily sin away, you will have no regrets, no abhorrence and I still promise you will never be punished by me, or yourself, or by any source whatever. You will be blissful for all eternity. So here is the pill!

Mortal: No, no!

God: Are you not being irrational? I am even removing your abhorrence of sin, which is your last obstacle.

Mortal: I still won't take it!

God: Why not?

Mortal: I believe that the pill will indeed remove my future abhorrence for sin, but my present abhorrence is enough to prevent me from being willing to take it.

God: I command you to take it!

Mortal: I refuse!

God: What, you refuse of your own free will?

Mortal: Yes!

God: So it seems that your free will comes in pretty handy, doesn't it?

Sorreesi is a brand new board game, invented by my kids.

It combines the best of Sorry and Parcheesi. It is incredibly fun. We have played it for hours and hours. Below are the official rules:

Pieces:

4 “Sorry” pawns in each of four colors

4 “Parcheesi” pawns in each of four colors

Two dice

One deck of Sorry cards

“Parcheesi” board

Set up:

Combine the four sets of 4 sorry pawns each and four sets of 4 parcheesi pawns each into four sets of 8 each

Place these into the four “base” or “start” sections (one tiger, one elephant, one camel, one ox) on the Parcheesi board

Action:

Players roll and move clockwise, in turns (for between 2 and 4 players)

Each player both rolls the dice and picks from the Sorry card each turn
- Rolling the dice first
- Then drawing from the Sorry card deck

In order to leave “base” or “start” you must either roll 5 with the dice or draw a Sorry card that allows you to “move from start”

In general you can move the total number of moves of the combined dice and the moves instructed in the card

Or you may split your moves apart by the number on each die and the card

You may also move the number of just one die and “pass” the number of the other.

You may not “pass” the instructions of the “Sorry” card
- If 5 dice and or the right “Sorry card” you may leave base
- Role again with doubles
- If you roll three doubles in a row, you must send the most recently moved piece back to base/start

In order to send a piece “home” you must roll (and or draw a card) with the exact number of moves to enter (the 8 spaces before each player’s “home” are safe)

When player places a pawn "home", they receive 10 bonus moves, they must use them in exactly 10 spaces, and be used in the same turn or be forfeited

Once a player has moved any pawn from any combination they cannot move back

Winning:

The first player to move all eight of their pieces into “home” wins the game

Special moves/rules:

Unlike Parcheesi, you cannot block another player’s moves (or your own) by having two pawns on the same space.

You may have as many of the same player’s pawns on the same space as you like

If an opponent lands on a space with another player’s pawn(s) they send all of those players pawns back to base/start (unless the opponent’s pawn(s) are on a safe space – see below for “fighting”
- For each of these opponent pawns sent back to base/start, the player receives 20 bonus moves
- These bonus moves must be used during this turn or be forfeited
- Bonus moves may be split between the players pieces but the moves must be in exact multiples of twenty

If a player lands on a safe space occupied by any opponent pawns, they have to “fight”
- To “fight” each player who occupies the same safe space rolls a single die
- Whoever rolls the highest wins
- Loosers must send all the pawns on that safe space back to their base
- (Exception – the Sorry Card for switching places with an opponent, cannot be down with an opponent’s pawn if it is on a safe space)

Teams:

Two players may work together as a team

If a team member lands on a space occupied by a teammate, they do not send them back to base/start

Have fun!!

In the midst of all the bad news about Katrina, and the concerns over effectiveness of administration efforts, there was a wonderful glimmer of hopefulness coming, not from a big non profit org, or helicopters, or agencies, or elected officials but from an inspired local business man and his family. I read about it this weekend in the NYT.

Bob Ford, a Mississippi golf course owner and caterer, and his family just plain old pitched in with all the resources at their disposal. Opening their refrigerators and pantries, rolling up their sleeves and helping feed people.

Not only that but they opened their home (which too had been damaged by the storm) to host a wedding of a displaced couple.

Helping out, having hope, being driven and organized had a magnetic effect. Bob and his wife Jocelyn brought all kinds of others together to pitch in.

My wife and I were so moved by this that we had to call them and ask how we could help. I talked to their son who said we had to talk to his mom, who "knew everything." Which, by the sound of the half dozen simultaneous calls she was taking and pushing (about food, shelter, clothing, jobs), sounded absolutely true.

Anyway, it was an inspiration to talk this wonderful, gracious family, who just plain know to do the right thing and that hope and action mean a lot more than words.

We decided to send them money for help. They seem to know what to do with it as well as anyone else.

We need more people like them in public office!!

If you would like you can send money to:

And the cheese. The cheese is marvelous and really special. Somehow the goats they raise on Salt Spring must be very happy because they sure do make good cheese. David Wood's Salt Spring Island Cheese has some of the most lovely goat cheeses I've ever had. Including the black truffle one - subtle, rich and yet light too. They also have black pepper, olive, red chili, garlic (pictured) and more. Drive out to their dairy. They are super nice and fun to talk to.

This is the first of several entries about Salt Spring Island. What an amazing place. An island between Vancouver, BC and Vancouver Island. Part artist colony, part Cape Cod, part hippy commune, part Canadian laid back vacation village, part farming/fishing salt of the earth.

We had a lovely time there (I recommend flying up on a floatplane from Kenmore Air).

And a high, high point was where we stayed. The Hastings House is not only a gracious inn with luxurious suites, beautiful grounds, lovely views, charming and immensely helpful staff. It is also a truly top notch restaurant that highlights the wonderful foods and wines of the Island and the region (and their own garden)!

Don't miss the glorious breakfasts or afternoon teas either. Boy, I have some working out to do now!!

According to his site:

"Seth Cosmo Burton is an artist/craftsman following the finest of traditions. Seth develops each design with detailed care and deliberation, with great skill and his experience in many materials: woods, metals and minerals. The energy and love that Seth puts into each piece emanates from the medium and beyond."

Paul Bara, Grand Rosé de Bouzy

Lovely, here's a review from Stephen Tanzer:

“Bright orange pink color. Exotic aroma of strawberry jam. Creamy and tactile, with exotic red fruit flavors delivering compelling ripeness. Started a tad warm but grew creamier and sweeter with aeration, shedding its impression of alcohol. A fruit bomb of a rosé that’s delicious right now.”

Also on the wine list at Cafe Juanita.

At the end of another wonderful evening at our favorite Seattle restaurant, Cafe Juanita, I just had one of the loveliest grappa's ever.

It's a Torcolato (grape also for a delicious dessert wine) from the Jacopo Poli Distillery.

For a nice review of the distillery as a whole go to Pantagruel. And for a review of this specific grappa, if you read German, go to Superiore:

"Charaktervolles Destillat mit reichem Aroma nach Beeren und Obst, im Mund herrlich rund und frisch, mit feiner Säure und leicht pfeffrigem Bitterton. Eine überaus gut gelungene Grappa!"

"A distilled liqour full of character with rich aromas of berries and fruit. Mouth admirably round and fresh with fine acidity and light peppery tones. An elaborately well crafted Grappa!"
